Clogging is a type of American folk dance with roots in traditional European dancing, early African-American dance, and traditional Cherokee dance. The dancer's footwear is used musically by striking the heel, the toe, or both in unison against a floor or each other to create audible percussive rhythms. Clogging was a social dance in the Appalachian Mountains as early as the 1700's. As the clogging style has migrated over the years, many localities have made contributions by adding local steps and rhythms to the style. Today, we clog to all types of music, including country, bluegrass, pop, gospel, etc. If it has a beat, we can clog to it!
Cherry City Cloggers was established in 1989. Our group consists of men, women, and children ranging in age from 8 - 85. Clogging, or "hillbilly tap dancing" as we call it, is a fun activity that can be done as a family or solo. We have lessons and dance every Tuesday evening at the Salem Square Dance Center on NE 45th Street. |
